The Finnish Organic Research Institute’s webinar series continues this September with four webinars, featuring current topics in organic research presented by field experts. Topics include intercropping and mixed crops in organic farming, the welfare of poultry and pigs in organic production, alternative plant protection methods, and the management of pesticide residues in recycled fertilizers and growing media. All webinars are mainly in Finnish, but materials are available also in English.
Check out the full program below and join in!
The webinars are open to everyone, free of charge, and no pre-registration is required. You can join all webinars via the ZOOM links provided in the program.
PROGRAM
Thu, 12 Sep, 3PM – 4PM
Better yields and climate protection in organic farming
Senior Researcher Marjo Keskitalo (LUKE) will share experiences collected from the Luovamix project on the success of autumn-sown protein crops and winter cereals. Developing diverse cultivation methods and techniques supports not only organic farming but also conventional farming in adapting to climate change, increasing the reliability of protein crop cultivation, and improving resource efficiency. Increasing protein crop cultivation also helps reduce the use of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers and reliance on fossil energy. More information about the project can be found [here](https://www.luke.fi/fi/projektit/luovamix).

Welfare of Poultry and Pigs in Organic Production
Research Professor Jarkko Niemi (LUKE) and Senior Researcher Minna Väre (LUKE) will discuss the results of the PPILOW project, which aims to develop solutions for improving the welfare of poultry and pigs in collaboration with stakeholders in the livestock sector. More information about the project can be found https://www.luke.fi/fi/projektit/ppilow

Wed, 12 Nov, 3PM – 4PM
Reducing Chemical Plant Protection in Finnish Agriculture
Senior Researcher Marja Jalli (LUKE) and Researcher Pentti Ruuttunen (LUKE) will discuss the “Itua ja vastetta” project, which studies predictive and direct IPM methods suitable for Finnish production environments using experiential knowledge and information exchange. The webinar will present on-farm trials where alternative plant protection methods have been tested. The project investigates methods suitable for Finnish conditions to reduce the use of chemical pesticides in cultivation. Wed, 11 Dec, 3PM – 4PM
Towards Sustainable Circular Economy: Management of Pesticide Residues in Recycled Fertilizers and Growing Media
Research Director Liisa Maunuksela and Senior Researcher Anne Relander from the Finnish Food Authority will present the ongoing Kiertokas project, which examines the impact of agricultural chemical residues. These residues affect not only herbivores but also the biochemical processes of plants and soil. Challenges are particularly evident in organic production, where the use of plant protection products is not permitted.
